Why I Wrote the Sikh Book I Couldn't Find

Updated: 2 hours ago

My favorite part of my day has always been settling down with my son, Aasis, for story time. We have stacks of books about every imaginative topic—from the hungry caterpillar to the kind Tiger to the musical Ditty Bird singing his favorite Mozart songs. We even have rhyming board books for children teaching the history of rap and rock.

These moments, holding him with a picture book, are pure magic—time stands still and it's a moment for deep bonding.

But when I wanted to read him a fun, interesting book on Sikhism for children, I couldn't find exactly what I was looking for. I wasn't just looking for any book. I was searching for something specific: an educational book that was genuinely fun, beautifully illustrated, and that spoke to the core stories (sakhis) of Sikhism in a way he would understand. I wanted him to see himself, his family, and his friends reflected authentically on those pages.

Time and again, the shelf for engaging Sikh children’s books was unfortunately empty. I only found academic texts aimed at adults or simple religious guides, but nothing that made the core Sikh tenets come alive in a way that truly resonated with a young child’s sense of imagination and wonder.

The empty shelf felt like a gap in my son's library preventing him from having an easy way to connect with his Sikh roots and identity. In that moment, I realized I had to write the book we were looking for and Live Love Sikh was born.

This book is the result of that dedicated mission—a heartfelt journey to bring Sikh wisdom into simple, childlike adventures. Every page is filled with fun, color, and easy-to-understand lessons about kindness, integrity, and community. The pages are filled with the light, joy, and strong values that we want Aasis, and all children, to learn and live by.

We poured our hearts into creating this book. It's not just as a story, but it's a mission to spread the Gurus teachings. We hope you enjoy reading this book to your family as much as we enjoy reading it to ours. This book is the first volume in a series with more to come.
